Henna Filler, Net and Vine Chain Patterns (Lesson 13)

Free Yemeni Henna Course · Lesson 13 of 14

What makes a design look professional is often not the main rose, but the small details around it. In this lesson you will learn three finishing touches that fill empty space, frame the fingers and carry the design up the arm: the nuffasha filler, the crosshatch net and vine chains.

Duration: 60 minutes · Level: Intermediate

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Fill space with the nuffasha filler.
  • Draw a crosshatch net.
  • Finish a design with a vine chain.

1. The nuffasha filler

Nuffasha is a cluster of small, closely packed elements: dots of mixed sizes, filled and hollow circles, tiny spirals and tiny stars. It fills the space around shapes or inside them. You already practiced its base, random mixed-size dots, in Lesson 5.

2. The crosshatch net

  1. Decide on the area: half a finger, or part of the back of the hand.
  2. Draw parallel diagonal lines with equal spacing.
  3. Draw a second set of lines over them in the opposite direction.
  4. Decorate the edges with dots or a small rose.

3. Vine chains

Chains are curves and shapes that close off the edges of a design and lead the eye along the hand or arm.

  1. Draw a soft curve coming out of the last rose.
  2. Add small leaves or teardrops along both sides.
  3. End it with graded dots, a spiral or a small heart.

Common mistakes

  • A crowded nuffasha: leave tiny gaps of skin between the elements so each one is visible.
  • A net with uneven squares: keep the spacing between lines the same in both directions.
  • A stiff chain: draw the curve in one smooth stroke, as in the warm-up from Lesson 7.

Exercise

Go back to your rose design from Lesson 10 and add: a nuffasha filler around the rose, a crosshatch net on two fingers, and a vine chain that ends on the forearm.
