Henna Lines and Simple Bracelet Designs (Lesson 6)
Free Yemeni Henna Course · Lesson 6 of 14
Once your dots are steady, lines are the next step. Lines frame fingers, build bracelets around the wrist, and add the tiny "hair strokes" that make Yemeni leaves so detailed. In this lesson you will draw three line widths and use them to design your first henna bracelet.
Duration: 45 minutes · Level: Beginner
By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
- Draw thin, medium and thick straight lines.
- Repeat lines and fill the spaces between them.
- Design a simple henna bracelet.
Types of lines
| Classified by | Types |
|---|---|
| Width | Thin, medium, thick |
| Repetition | Same width or mixed widths, with equal or unequal spacing |
| Direction | Horizontal, vertical, diagonal to the right, diagonal to the left |
| Fill | The gap between two lines filled with dots, circles, triangles or letters |
How to draw each width
| Line | Movement |
|---|---|
| Thin | Brush vertical, touching the skin with no pressure |
| Medium | Light pressure on the side of the brush, down to its middle |
| Thick | Brush fully on its side, then drag |
The secret is speed. Draw each line in one fast stroke. Going slowly makes it wavy.
Where do lines go in a design?
- On the fingers.
- In bracelets (bands) around the wrist.
- Inside hollow shapes.
- As "hair strokes": short, thin lines that decorate leaves (Lesson 9).
Common mistakes
- Wavy lines: drawing too slowly. Commit to one quick stroke.
- Lines that change width halfway: the pressure changed during the stroke.
- Bracelet lines that don't stay parallel: rest your little finger and move your whole hand, not just the fingers.
Exercise
Draw three bracelets, each made of two parallel lines with a space between them. Fill the first with dots, the second with triangles, and the third with diagonal lines
