Henna Curves and Geometric Shapes (Lesson 7)

Free Yemeni Henna Course · Lesson 7 of 14

Most henna is made of curves. A light, confident curve is what makes a chain flow and a rose look natural. In this lesson you will warm up your hand with curves, then learn the three geometric shapes that many Yemeni designs are built on: the circle, the diamond and the triangle.

Duration: 60 minutes · Level: Beginner

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Draw smooth curves with a light hand.
  • Draw circles, diamonds and triangles in different arrangements.
  • Build a complete design around one geometric shape.

Curves: warm up first

Before every practice session, draw the shapes 2, 3 and S many times, quickly, across a page. This loosens your wrist and gives your curves the smooth flow you will need for chains and roses.

The circle

The circle is the starting point of many designs and roses.

Variation Options
Size Small, medium, large
Overlapping Two circles vertically or horizontally, or three circles together
Nested Circles inside one another

The diamond

The diamond has four equal sides, and it is often the center of a design, surrounded by leaves.

Type Use it for
Small Fingers and spaces between lines
Large A central motif on the back of the hand or the forearm
Double or intersecting More elaborate designs

Tip: draw a < mark facing a > mark, and the diamond comes out symmetrical. Decorate the outside freely, and keep the inside light, with a few dots only.

The triangle

The triangle is less common. You will see it most often inside bracelets, between two lines, alternating filled and hollow. Try it with the bracelets you drew in Lesson 6.

Common mistakes

  • Stiff, broken curves: your hand is too tense. Do the 2, 3 and S warm-up again.
  • A lopsided diamond: draw the two halves as mirror marks, not one line at a time.
  • A crowded center: too much decoration inside the shape. Keep the inside light.

Exercise

Draw a large diamond in the center of the back of your hand, then decorate its outside with simple leaves and dots
